Nigerian Court Bars National Assembly From Taking Further Actions On Electoral Act

Yesterday, President Muhammadu Buhari rejected the call for him to re-order election in a letter he conveyed to the national assembly where the lawmakers vowed they would veto the president should in case he refuse to assent to it. However, a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, on Wednesday, stopped the National Assembly from taking further action on the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, 2018. The court, in a ruling delivered by Justice Ahmed Mohammed, ruled that all asked parties in the matter to maintain status quo antebellum, “at least between now and the next adjourned date.” Hide quoted text The presiding judge invoked section 6(6) of the 1999 constitution, as amended, which according to him, empowered the court to protect the Res (subject matter) of the substantive suit pending before it. Justice Mohammed adjourned the case till Tuesday next week.

Today, the Nigerian President , Muhammadu Buhari rejected the amendment to the Electoral Act proposed by National Assembly. Recalled, the  National Assembly  proposed that presidential election comes last in amendment to the Electoral Act 2010. Buhari however, rejected the move stating three reasons for withholding assent to the bill. According to Daily Trust the president on Monday communicated his decision to the federal legislature in two separate letters addressed to the Senate President Bukola Saraki and Speaker Yakubu Dogara. In the letter, Buhari in his letter to the Senate and read before the hallowed chamber, stated that ”Pursuant to section 58(4) of the 1999 constitution as amended, I hereby convey to the Senate my decision on March 3, 2018 to decline presidential assent to the electoral amendment bill 2018 recently passed by the National Assembly.” The President said some of his reasons for withholding assent to the bill was that, ”The amendment to th...

New electoral law debacle.. The National Assembly has vowed to override President Muhammadu Buhari’s veto on the Electoral Act Amendment Bill,Daily Post reports. The bill seeks to re-order the sequence of the polls during general elections starting from the 2019 polls. The Senate has made its intention to exercise its veto powers should Buhari withhold assent on the bill known. The House of Representatives had earlier said the lawmakers would not hesitate to override the President’s decision if he vetoed the bill. The Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Abdulrazak Namdas, told Punch that members would not change their minds on the Electoral Act as amended. INEC Fixes General Election Dates For 36 Years

Independent National Electoral Commission fixed and announced dates for general elections in the country for the next 36 years. This covers the 2019 elections up to the year 2055. INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, announced the decision at a meeting with leaders of political parties in the nation’s capital, Abuja on Wednesday. According to the INEC chairman, general elections will be held on February 16 and March 2 in 2019; February 18 and March 4 in 2023. The commission picked February 20 and March 6 for the 2027 general elections; February 15 and March 1 were picked for 2031. Other dates are February 17 and March 3 for 2035; February 19 and March 5 for 2039; February 21 and March 7 for 2043. “In 2047, it is February 15 and March 2; in 2051, it is February 18 and March 1; in 2055, it is February 20 and March 6,” Professor Yakubu added. Abia State ex governor, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu,  has promised to deliver over 70%  Igbo votes to President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2019 election. Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, has declared November 17, 2017, as a work-free day to enable civil servants in the state to relocate to their electoral wards to be able to participate in the governorship polls on the 18th. 1Million Adhoc Workers To Be Employed For 2019 General Elections -INEC Says

In preparations of the 2019 elections, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) , Prof.Mahmud Yakub , has told the Senate Committee on INEC that the commission would recruit about one million ad hoc members of staff for the conduct of the 2019 general elections.  According to him, the ad hoc workers to be deployed for the polls, which will begin in 484 days, will be about 300k higher than the 700k engaged for the 2015 general elections.  He said, “The projected increase in the number of ad hoc (members of ) staff to be engaged in the elections by the commission arose from the need to make provisions for adequate manpower for the exercise on a general template and, specifically, to take care of peculiar needs for that purpose in some  polling units across the federation.”  The INEC boss, at the interactive session with the lawmakers, also disclosed that the commission was planning to make the five categories of disfranchised Nige...
