Today, the Nigerian President , Muhammadu Buhari rejected the amendment to the Electoral Act proposed by National Assembly. Recalled, the  National Assembly  proposed that presidential election comes last in amendment to the Electoral Act 2010. Buhari however, rejected the move stating three reasons for withholding assent to the bill. According to Daily Trust the president on Monday communicated his decision to the federal legislature in two separate letters addressed to the Senate President Bukola Saraki and Speaker Yakubu Dogara. Nigerian Senate on Monday admonished the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, against undermining the powers of the National Assembly in the amendment to the Electoral Act 2010. President of the senate, Bukola Saraki issued the warning while making reference to the controversy generated by the recent amendment to Section 25 of the Electoral Act, which seeks to re-order the sequence of elections during the 2019 elections. Saraki spoke while declaring open a public hearing on the bill seeking to establish the National Electoral Offences Commission, which was conducted by the Senate’s Joint Committee on INEC, Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters. Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has explained that contrary to people’s believe that the National Assembly had fixed the dates for election, it they only fixed the sequence of elections. DAILY POST reports that there has been a controversy trailing the proposed amendment to the Electoral Act recently passed by the National Assembly currently awaiting the Presidential assent to become a law. Independent National Electoral Commission fixed and announced dates for general elections in the country for the next 36 years. This covers the 2019 elections up to the year 2055. INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, announced the decision at a meeting with leaders of political parties in the nation’s capital, Abuja on Wednesday. According to the INEC chairman, general elections will be held on February 16 and March 2 in 2019; February 18 and March 4 in 2023. The commission picked February 20 and March 6 for the 2027 general elections; February 15 and March 1 were picked for 2031. Other dates are February 17 and March 3 for 2035; February 19 and March 5 for 2039; February 21 and March 7 for 2043. “In 2047, it is February 15 and March 2; in 2051, it is February 18 and March 1; in 2055, it is February 20 and March 6,” Professor Yakubu added. The Imo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Prof. Francis Chukwuemeka Ezeonu, says 2019 elections would be difficult to rig as all results from the polling units would be transmitted electronically to the collation centre. Ezeonu, therefore, advised politicians to reach out to electorates to register and collect their PVCs. The state’s Resident Electoral Commissioner revealed this over the weekend, when the leadership of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists Imo state council paid him a courtesy visit. He further expressed worry that 370,000 Permanent Voters Cards (PVCS) were yet be collected by the owners who had registered between 2011 and 2014 during the voters’ registration exercise. Nigeria's electoral body, Independent National Electoral Commission (EFCC) has asked the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to help it track sources of campaign finances by registered political parties and their candidates as the commission decried high rate of vote buying by political parties and their candidates at polling centres during election.

The electoral umpire says Presidential and National Assembly primaries will begin on August 18 while campaigns will commence on November 18, 2018. Campaigns for the governorship and state assembly are scheduled to commence on December the 1, 2018. Nigeria's electoral body, has allegedly 'indict' the governor of Kogi state in new reports. The electoral body,  Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that the Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, engaged in double registration during the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise in his state, effectively violating the Electoral Act. The commission stated this in a statement issued Thursday night by the National Commissioner & Member, Information and Voter Education Committee, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu. He said , following reports of alleged double registration by the governor of Kogi State in the on-going CVR exercise, the commission had set up a panel of investigation into the involvement of staff in the matter. They also explained that the initial report submitted by the panel was referred to the Appointment, Promotion and Disciplinary Committee, which made recommendations to the commission. Independent National Electoral Commission INEC has declared incumbent Anambra state governor, Willie Obiano, as the winner of the state governorship election that held yesterday November 18th. He pulled a total of 195, 256 votes to beat his close rival, APC's Tony Nwoye who pulled a total of 79, 885. PDP's Oseloka Obaze, pulled 60, 967 votes to come third. In preparations of the 2019 elections, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) , Prof.Mahmud Yakub , has told the Senate Committee on INEC that the commission would recruit about one million ad hoc members of staff for the conduct of the 2019 general elections.  According to him, the ad hoc workers to be deployed for the polls, which will begin in 484 days, will be about 300k higher than the 700k engaged for the 2015 general elections.  He said, “The projected increase in the number of ad hoc (members of ) staff to be engaged in the elections by the commission arose from the need to make provisions for adequate manpower for the exercise on a general template and, specifically, to take care of peculiar needs for that purpose in some  polling units across the federation.”  The INEC boss, at the interactive session with the lawmakers, also disclosed that the commission was planning to make the five categories of disfranchised Nige...
