According to Premium Times , twenty-nine of the 30 lawyers nominated to be sworn in as Senior Advocates of Nigeria, SANs will on Monday take their oaths of office, despite allegations of unethical practices made against three of them. According to the Legal Practitioner’s Privileges Committee, LPPC, the swearing-in exercise will involve all those shortlisted for the position of SAN, except one of the nominees, Oluwatoyin Bashorun, who has a petition containing allegations against her which would be investigated before a decision can be made regarding her swearing in. However, Ms. Bashorun appears not to be the only candidate with unanswered questions hovering around candidacy. It could be recalled that a current Vice-Chancellor of the University of Uyo, Enefiok Essien, wo is shortlisted was involved in a sex scandal and subsequently indicted by a court of law in 2005. Nigeria's Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, has approved the appointment of 19 judges for the National Industrial Court, following recommendation by the National Judicial Council.

140 judges of the Sharia, Area and Customary Courts of Nigeria serving in Plateau State have commenced an indefinite strike over non-payment of dressing allowances owed them since 2009. The judges said they recently gave the Plateau State government a 14-day ultimatum to pay the arrears, but the government did not. Addressing journalists shortly after a closed-door meeting, the chairman of the forum of judges, Ayuba Danzel, said they were left with no option. “Since government failed to pay us our outstanding dressing allowances for the past nine years, and its refusal to heed to several appeals and the most recent ultimatum given by our association – Sharia, Area and Customary Courts Association of Nigeria (SACCJAN) – we have resolved to embark on an indefinite strike from this day 14th June 2017 till our demands are fully met.” Mr. Danzel added that “we, the 140 judges will be going to our respective offices as required, but there will be no court sitting until we are p...

Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Ibrahim Auta, has approved the redeployment of controversial judge of the Federal High Court Abuja Division, Justice Okon Abang, to Asaba, Delta state. A circular sent out this morning by the court, says the redeployment takes effect from January 30th. Justice Auta said shortage of judges due to recent developments in the court, necessitated the redeployment.    The circular in part reads “In view of the fact some divisions are currently short of judge following the recent developments in the court, it has become necessary to take urgent steps to fill in existing vacancies. Affected judges are expected to resume in their new divisions by  January 30, 2017 .
