UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) today  concluded a 15-year mission in the one-time war-torn country, describing its operations as a success. The UN said the peacekeepers were departing a “stable and grateful Liberia” as peacekeeping mission in the country formally ceased operations on Friday after aiding Liberia’s transition from ravaging civil war to a hopeful era of peace.   The conclusion of the 15-year operation follows a landmark election that resulted in the country’s first transfer of power from one elected president to another in 70 years.  The newly elected President, George Weah, spoke for many Liberians as he thanked the UN for helping to make that possible.   “In our darkest days, the UN stood with us,” Weah said in his inaugural address in January.  Weah, a former football star, won the presidency in a runoff election in December, succeeding Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, who had served since 2006. Today, the Liberian President, George Weah, met with Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari behind for a closed door meeting at the states house,Abuja.  Mr Weah, after the meeting declared that the Super Eagles of Nigeria have the potential to win the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Daily Post says. The president who is the only African player to have won the coveted World Footballer of the Year Award during his playing days said he had confidence in the eagles. Responding to a questions from the Nigerian media on Monday after he held a closed-door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa Abuja, Weah said, “everything that the players need must be put in place as they prepare for the World Cup.” He further advised Nigeria to ensure early preparation, adding that a situation where the players lose concentration because, “one Minister took money away” should not be allowed to happen. The lady above was arrested few days ago after she inflicted bodily harm on a little girl for allegedly eating her rice. According to report, the young lady soaked the little girl's hand inside a hot oil and locked her up in a room for one month. It took the efforts of a concerned neighbor to call the police who invaded the apartment and arrested her.  See the little girl's photo below...

The Liberia's president, George Weah has announced that he will be slashing his salary by 25% as part of an effort to confront his country's "broken economy." "In view of the very rapidly deteriorating situation of the economy, I am informing you today, with immediate effect, that I will reduce my salary and benefits by 25%. I believe that it is appropriate that we should all make sacrifices in the interest of our country. The former football star and Ballon d'Or winner, George Weah was today sworn in as the country's 24th president. He was today sworn in by he chief justice of the Supreme Court, Francis Korkpor. 

51-year old legendary footballer, George Weah has been sworn in as the 24th president of Liberia. Mr Weah, was sworn in on Monday afternoon by the chief justice of the Supreme Court, Francis Korkpor. The ceremony took place at the 35,000 capacity Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Monrovia. Nigeria Vice Present ,Yemi Osinbajo represented President Muhammadu Buhari and other African heads of state were in attendance too. Senate president Bukola Saraki and former president Olusegun Obasanjo, including  Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha also attended the swearing-in ceremony. President, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, has reportedly been expelled by her own party, Unity Party, for failing to support its candidate to succeed her during the presidential election in December 2017. 

Ahead of his swearing in of newly elected president of Liberia on 22nd of January,2018.  Liberia’s National Elections Commission (NEC) has presented certificate of return to the President-elect, George Weah; Vice President-elect, Jewel Howard-Taylor, and the newly elected members of the House of Representatives.   Chairman of NEC, Jerome Korkoya, performed the ceremony at the commission’s headquarters in Monrovia on Thursday evening and according to local media, 66 out of the 73 elected lawmakers were certificated, leaving out seven who are facing legal challenges over their election results.

One time world's footballer and former Ballon d’Or winner, George Weah has been announced as the President-elect of Liberia, West Africa. The 51-year-old former World Footballer of the Year swept thirteen (13) out of the fifteen (15) counties with his 73-year-old opponent Joseph Boakai getting only two (2) counties. Weah who has been elected as the 25th President of Liberia with the population of just a little above 3million took to the micro-blogging site, Twitter to thank all his supporters, saying that he plans to liberate the country. The former AC Milan striker wrote on Twitter:  ” It is with deep emotion that I want to thank you, the Liberian people, for honouring me with your vote today. It is a great hope”.

The Liberia’s electotoral commission has slated 26th December for presidential elections runoffon . In making the announcement publicly, the electoral body said' “I am pleased to announce that the 2017 presidential runoff elections will be conducted on Tuesday December 26, 2017,” the president of the National Elections Commission (NEC), Jerome Korkoya, said. Recalled, the country's Supreme Court last Thursday ordered the commission to proceed with the vote after it was delayed for a month by fraud complaints.

The Liberia’s electoral commission has announced a run-off vote for the nation's presidential seat. The runoff will be between ex football star George Weah and incumbent Vice-President Joseph Boakai. With the vote counts in from 95.6 percent of the polling stations, Weah has taken 39.0 percent of the votes and Boakai 29.1 percent, both well short of the 50 percent barrier required to win the presidency outright from the first round of voting held on Tuesday. National Elections Commission chairman Jerome Korkoya said 1,550,923 votes had been counted and turnout was at 74.52 percent. Three other candidates took a significant share of votes with veteran opposition leader Charles Brumskine at 9.8 percent, former Coca-Cola Executive Alexander Cummings at 7.1 percent and former warlord turned preacher Prince Johnson at 7.0 percent.
