The Nigerian Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has said that the National Assembly will ensure that the 2018 budget be passed next week. The senate president disclosed this to state house correspondents after his visit to President Buhari yesterday May 7th. In the same vein, the House of Representatives says it will pass the 2018 budget before the end of next week.  The House Committee Chairman on Media and Public Affairs made the statement while briefing journalists at the end of Thursday’s plenary. According to him, the budget will be laid before the house on Tuesday next week,according to LIB.

Some heavily masked men of the Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have taken over guard duties at the National Assembly complex in Abuja.  This development comes after the invasion and stealing of the mace by thugs sponsored by suspended lawmaker, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege on April 18th. The mace has since been found and returned to the chamber. Senate President in reaction to the incident, called for improved security within the National Assembly premises. According to the senate president, the attack on the red chambers by the thugs, was an assault on democracy and the rule of law. On Wednesday, a Federal High Court in Abuja,held that the National Assembly lacks the power to re-order the proposed sequence for 2019 general elections. According to Vanguard, the court, in a judgment that was delivered by Justice Ahmed Mohammed, maintained that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, is the only body that is constitutionally empowered to organise, undertake and supervise elections in the country. “I am persuaded by argument of the plaintiff that it is the sole responsibility of the 3rd defendant (INEC) to conduct elections, and further in doing so, the 3rd defendant has the power to fix dates for elections”, the court held. It noted that the NASS commenced moves to amend the Electoral Act after INEC had already released its timetable for the 2019 elections. Following President's decision to withhold assent to Peace Corps,Electoral bill and others. The Nigerian House of Representatives, on Wednesday, reintroduced a Bill for an Act to establish Nigerian Peace Corps, which was recently rejected by President Muhammad Buhari, Daily Post reports. Spokesman of the House, Hon. Abdulrazak Namdas, had Wednesday last week, informed National Assembly Correspondents that, the lower chamber was going to review the Peace Corps Bill and others, which were considered as popular Bills but were rejected by the Presidency. At Wednesday’s plenary, the Bills were gazetted and passed first reading by the lawmakers. Aside the Nigerian Peace Corps Bill, 2018 (HB. 89) which was being sponsored by Hon. Faruk Abdullahi); the House also regazetted the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill, 2018 (HB. 966) and sponsored by Hon. Karimi Steve Sunday and 7 others. House of Representatives has recalled  the former Chairman of House Committee on Appropriation, Abdulmumin Jibrin a after almost a year of suspension. Recalled ,Jibrin was suspended in June 2017 after accusing the house leadership of Budget padding. His recall comes after he sent a letter of apology to the House. The letter was read during plenary today by the Speaker of the House, Mr Yakubu Dogara. While presenting the letter, Dogara said that the suspended legislator had met all the conditions necessary for him to resume his duties and that he is free to resume his legislative duties whenever he so wished.

Today, the Nigerian President , Muhammadu Buhari rejected the amendment to the Electoral Act proposed by National Assembly. Recalled, the  National Assembly  proposed that presidential election comes last in amendment to the Electoral Act 2010. Buhari however, rejected the move stating three reasons for withholding assent to the bill. According to Daily Trust the president on Monday communicated his decision to the federal legislature in two separate letters addressed to the Senate President Bukola Saraki and Speaker Yakubu Dogara. New electoral law debacle.. The National Assembly has vowed to override President Muhammadu Buhari’s veto on the Electoral Act Amendment Bill,Daily Post reports. The bill seeks to re-order the sequence of the polls during general elections starting from the 2019 polls. The Senate has made its intention to exercise its veto powers should Buhari withhold assent on the bill known. The House of Representatives had earlier said the lawmakers would not hesitate to override the President’s decision if he vetoed the bill. Inspite of cash crunch been portrayed by the Nigerian government, twenty exotic cars are said to have been imported for members of the House of Representatives and hundred more are expected into the country according to PUNCH . Findings showed that the additional 20 units brought the total number of cars delivered to 260. It implies that 100 units are still being awaited to make the vehicles go round all 360 members of the House. Otherwise known as ‘utility’ or ‘committee’ vehicles, the House is buying 360 units of Peugeot 508 for legislative services. Each unit is supplied at the price tag of N17m. This leaves the total cost of the 360 units at N6.1bn. Investigations indicated that the 20 units started arriving at the legislative building early last week and as of Friday, all had been delivered. House Of Reps Chief Whip, Alhassan Doguwa, has criticised the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, for faulting the military’s declaraton of IPOB as a terrorist group. Mr. Saraki on Monday said the military has no constitutional power to declare any group a terrorist organisation. He also said the South-east governors who proscribed the pro-Biafran separatist group had no power to do so. In his reaction, Mr. Doguwa, a member of Mr. Saraki’s All Progressives Congress, said the senate president’s stance was “a mere political statement.” “For me, the recent comment made by the Senate Presi dent on this matter was a mere political statement that would only portray him as a controversial leader,” he said. Few days back the Nigerian senate embarked on the amendment of the 1999 constitution and in one of it 33 amendments, senate voted to cut down president's powers in assenting bills thereby giving more powers to the upper chambers.

The Nigerian Senate yesterday 27th, July 2017 reviewed the 1999 constitution and most remarkable step worth mentioning was that aspect where the senate whittle the powers of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, if he decides to withhold assent in the process of altering the Constitution of the country.
