Today, plenary session at the Senate was almost disrupted following a  comment by one senator Enyinnaya Harcourt Abaribe claiming that President Muhammadu Buhari was  incompetent. Daily Post reports that, Abaribe’s allegation followed an adopted order 43 which he raised in reference to the excuse which the President gave while in London that the killer herdsmen were allegedly trained by Muammar Gaddafi, the late Libyan revolutionary leader. In his explanation, Abaribe said, before now, two excuses have been made public in several fora by the Minister of Interior, Abdulrahaman Dambazzau and the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim kpotun Idris, saying the wanton killings by armed herdsmen was because their pastoral routes were blocked while the latter was credited to have said that it was due to the new state laws against open grazing. Today, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege representing Delta Central Senatorial district was during Thursday plenary suspended for 90 legislative days on Thursday. The Senate Committee on Public Petitions, Ethics and Privileges which investigated him over comment on the reordering of electoral timetable recommended his suspension. The report which was submitted by the Committee Chairman, Senator Samuel Anyanwu explained that the erring lawmaker declined to speak to the committee when he appeared. According to the report, the erring lawmaker told the Committee that he has taken the matter to court already. Senate leader, Ahmed Lawan in his personal opinion pleaded that he should not be suspended. However, Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki could not be dissuaded by the appeal from Senator Ahmed Lawan and Senator Kabir Marafa. Nigeria's Senate President, Bukola Saraki has dismissed report that he will contest the 2019 presidential elections. Speaking through his Special adviser on Media and Publicity, Yusuf Olaniyonun, the senate President described the rumour as false. In a chat with Independent, Olaniyonun said “the report is false. If it is true that he is contesting, you would have seen the report it in major dailies since last week Saturday when the news broke out on social media. But as you can see, there is nothing like that.” Recall that veteran journalist and former presidential aspirant, Dele Momodu had over the weekend claimed that Saraki will be contesting the 2019 presidential polls. Senator Ali Wakili,58, who died yesterday has been laid to rest at Abuja Cemetery. The senator who represented Bauchi South in the Senate, died after suffering a heart attack in his home in Abuja early morning. He was certified dead after he was rushed to the hospital. According to reports,  Wakili, had told his close friends and associates that he will like to be buried anywhere death meets him. Senator Abdullahi Adamu Speak On N70 Million Allegedly Swallowed By Monkey

Nasarawa West Senator in the National Assembly, Abdullahi Adamu has spoken on the reported N70 million belonging to the Northern Senators Forum, NSF, allegedly swallowed by monkey. Speaking in an interview with Daily Trust, the senator said the allegation was made to give him a bad name following his position on the electoral act amendment bill. According to him, “In order to give a dog a bad name, they now went to say that they had N70m that I mismanaged or whatever. Today, the Nigerian President , Muhammadu Buhari rejected the amendment to the Electoral Act proposed by National Assembly. Recalled, the  National Assembly  proposed that presidential election comes last in amendment to the Electoral Act 2010. Buhari however, rejected the move stating three reasons for withholding assent to the bill. According to Daily Trust the president on Monday communicated his decision to the federal legislature in two separate letters addressed to the Senate President Bukola Saraki and Speaker Yakubu Dogara. Nigerian Senate on Monday admonished the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, against undermining the powers of the National Assembly in the amendment to the Electoral Act 2010. President of the senate, Bukola Saraki issued the warning while making reference to the controversy generated by the recent amendment to Section 25 of the Electoral Act, which seeks to re-order the sequence of elections during the 2019 elections. Saraki spoke while declaring open a public hearing on the bill seeking to establish the National Electoral Offences Commission, which was conducted by the Senate’s Joint Committee on INEC, Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters. The senate President said the National Assembly reserved the powers to legislate over the electoral body and other agencies of government. According to a new proposed bill by the Nigerian Senate any person found guilty of any form of hate speech that results in the death of another person shall die by hanging upon conviction. The bill, which reflects the growing concern over the spate of violence in the nation, was sponsored by the spokesman of the upper chamber, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi (APC, Niger). It also seeks the establishment of an ‘Independent National Commission for Hate Speeches’, which shall enforce hate speech laws across the country, ensure the elimination of the menace and advise the Federal Government. Nigeria's Senate President, Bukola Saraki was not among the members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the ongoing national executive council meeting of the ruling party. Saraki was conspicuously absent on Monday night when President Muhammadu Buhari hosted the APC caucus at the presidential villa in Abuja. With his missing the meeting has made it the second time in a row. On Monday, the president told top members of the party to prepare for the 2019 elections. He also thanked them for standing by him “despite the antics of the opposition”. Governors, ministers and top members of the ruling party are at the meeting holding at the headquarters of the APC in Abuja.   Earlier in the day, Saraki was at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), where his trial was adjourned following a complaint by Kanu Agabi, his counsel. Dino Melaye, senator representing Kogi west, accompanied him to the tribunal.

DRAMA As Senators Walk Out During Plenary Session

There was a mild drama at the national assembly earlier today,  following the the senate's votes for the re-adjustment of  a new electoral system which some member see as a target launched at President. According to reports, the 10 members of the Senate today staged a walk-out in protest against the adoption of the report by the Senate and House of Representatives Joint Committee on the Amendment to the Electoral Act. The protesters say despite the adoption of the report by the Senate, they would insist on its reversal. They alleged that the amendment was targeted at President Muhammadu Buhari. Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Independent National Electoral Commission, Senator Suleiman Nazif, had presented the report at the plenary on Wednesday. Tragedy struck in Plateau state following the death of a former Senator , General John Nanzip Shagaya (Rtd). The former senator represented Plateau Southern Zone has died following a ghastly motor accident on his way to his hometown, Langtang , according to Daily Post. Shagaya was an erstwhile Senator who represented Plateau South in the National Assembly from 2007 – 2011. Shagaya was also a former ECOMOG Peacekeeping Commander in Liberia and a former Minister of Interior, under General Ibrahim Babangida’s regime. Family sources said he died after a ghastly motor accident along Langtang Road, in southern plateau. The former Senator was recently appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari to head the board of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS).

A UK based media has report that the Transparency International UK has listed two London houses suspected to be owned by Nigeria’s Senate President, Bukola Saraki for investigation under Britain’s new law, Unexplained Wealth Orders, which became effective from 31 January, Sahara Reporters says. According to TI, Land Registry documents show that the houses at 7 and 8 Whittaker Street, Belgravia, London are owned by Landfield International Developments Limited and Renocon Property Development Limited. Based on current market estimates by Zoopla, the properties are worth a combined total of around £15 million. According to data released as part of the Panama Papers, these companies were controlled by Toyin Saraki, the wife of the President of the Nigerian Senate, Bukola Saraki as well as one of his personal aides. Nigerian Senator representing Abia South Senatorial District, Enyinaya Abaribe, has applied to the court to be discharged from the suretyship, bond and recognizance of the bail of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu TheNigerianLawyers reports. In an application filed against the Federal Government, Nnamdi Kanu, and his co-defendants, Senator Abaribe is asking the court to make an order discharging him as surety to Abaribe prayed the court to discharge him entirely from the incidence of bail of Kanu.
