15-years After, United Nations Peacekeepers Finally Leaves Liberia

UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) today  concluded a 15-year mission in the one-time war-torn country, describing its operations as a success. The UN said the peacekeepers were departing a “stable and grateful Liberia” as peacekeeping mission in the country formally ceased operations on Friday after aiding Liberia’s transition from ravaging civil war to a hopeful era of peace.   The conclusion of the 15-year operation follows a landmark election that resulted in the country’s first transfer of power from one elected president to another in 70 years.  The newly elected President, George Weah, spoke for many Liberians as he thanked the UN for helping to make that possible.   “In our darkest days, the UN stood with us,” Weah said in his inaugural address in January.  Weah, a former football star, won the presidency in a runoff election in December, succeeding Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, who had served since 2006. The U.N medical doctor,Onyedikachukwu Anthony Izuogu, employed as a third-party consultant with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF)  who was killnd in Rann, Borno State together with two aide during an attack by Boko Haram terrorists on 1st March 2018 has been laid to rest. Late Izuogu was buried yesterday in his home town, Umukalu Umukor Nkwerre in Nkwerre LGA of Imo State.  His friends and former classmate, Nnabueze Atama took to social media to mourn his untimely death. "They never degraded them, they never defeated them, either technically, terribly or otherwise, they were just lying to us as usual, they believe we are fools; we accept anything.""" Amina Mohammade: 37 UN Job Opportunities Open For Nigerians

Amina Mohammade,the UN deputy secretary-general, has said that there are 37 career openings for young Nigerians under the United Nations bureaucracy. Amina disclosed this at a Cultural Night organised by Nigerians working at the United Nations Systems. She said the openings are available via the Junior Professional Officers’ (JPO) Programme, including internship for young graduates. According to her, Nigeria has the opportunity to sponsor its youth for UN careers through the JPO. But Nigeria has not seized the opportunity in a long while, she noted. JPO is a programme for the young people to come and grow their career at the UN and it has 37 positions for Nigeria – one for each of the 36 States and the Federal Capital Territory. At the cultural night, Amina asked older Nigerians to pave the way for the youth by creating leadership opportunities for them . She urged them to stop competing with the younger ones for employment opportunities.
