BENUE: A Brief Biography of Tor Tiv, Dr Alfred Akawe Torkula



It’s no longer news that our beloved Father Dr Alfred Akawe Torkula the Tor Tiv IV has gone to meet his Ancestors. As we mourn his demise let us take a brief look at his brief Biogragraphy below:


Born on 10th July, 1944 at Tse-Torkula in Mbadwem District, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State in North Central Nigeria, Dr Alfred Akawe Torkula attended the then Tiv N. A. Elementary School, Gboko from 1953 to 1958 and St. Theresa’s Catholic Primary School, Naka in 1959.
From 1960 to 1964, Dr Alfred Akawe Torkula was at Mt. Saint Micheal’s Secondary School, Aliade where he proceeded to Kings College Lagos. From Kings College, Lagos, he proceeded to Ahmadu Bello University Zaria and then University of Besancon, France, from  1967 to 1971 amd obtained B. A. (HONS), DEFE, Specializing in French Language.
Dr Alfred Akawe Torkula joined the then Benue Plataeu State Civil Service and later on was transfered to Benue State upon the creation of Benue State in 1976, as a Benue State Civil Servant. He held many positions including The Permanent Secretary and Director-General. In April, 1989, he was appointed a Commissioner thus becoming a member of the Benue State Execitive Council.
In 1991, he went through the process and became The Tor Tiv IV, and Chairman The Benue State council Of Traditional Rulers to date.
Dr Alfred Akawe Torkula who holds a Ph. D in Cultural Anthropology has Honourary LL.D and D. SC from The University of Ibadan and Michael Okpara University Of Agriculture, Umudike respectively.
A one time Chancellor of The University Ibadan, His Royal Highness, Orchivirigh, Dr Alfred Akawe Torkula, Begha-Tiv, The Tor Tiv IV, is the current Chancellor Of The University Of Agriculture, Umudike.
Married with many children and grand children, The Tor Tiv IV is a Comander Of The Federal Republic (CFR) and a Jerusalem Pilgrim, (JP).
