The Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom has exonerated the Speaker, Benue
State House of Assembly, Mr. Terkimbi Ikyange from allegation of
misappropriation of N750m meant for the purchase of Vehicles for the
State lawmakers. Governor Ortom explained that the contract for the purchase of the
vehicles amounted to N317 million and not N750m as been speculated in a
section of the media. Governor Ortom explaining a point in the studios of Radio Benue Makurdi on Monday, July 25th,2016.
Speaking on a special edition of Issues of the Moment on the State
Radio Station on Monday, 25th of July, 2016 , the Governor said it is
wrong for anybody to link Mr. Ikyange to the contract, adding that
neither the Speaker nor members of the House were awarded the contract. He explained that despite the harsh economic situation the State was
passing through, his administration had to release the money for the
purchase of the vehicles because apart from being their legitimate
entitlements, the vehicles were meant to assist them in the Coduct of
their Constitutional responsibility as members of an important arm of
government. The Governor said it will be wrong for anybody to insinuate that the
Speaker and his leadership were involved in any fishy deal pointing that
about twenty two state lawmakers were invited by the EFCC for
interrogation because when the contractor could not supply the cars due
to the differentials noticed in the prizes of the vehicles, the
contractor went into an agreement with the lawmakers which saw them
receiving cash instead of vehicles. Governor Ortom said the EFCC faulted the move by the lawmakers and
disclosed that the matter has already been resolved and charged the
people of the State to disregard all the falsehood being peddled against
some officers of his administration.
Meanwhile, Speaker, Bemue State House of Assembly, Mr. Terkimbi
Ikyange has called on Students not to allow themselved to be use by self
seeking politicians to further their selfish political interests. Mr. Ikyange particularly advised students of Ushongo origin studying
in institutions of higher learning in the state not to be willing tools
in the hands of desperate politicians who are bent on spreading
falsehood against their fellow brothers in order to score cheap
popularity and to divert attention from their inadequecies and non
performance in their various capcities. According to the Ushongo representative, his attention has been drawn
to plans by some desperate politicians in Kwande intermediate area to
sponsor some youths under the disguise of Ushongo Students with the sole
aim of spreading all forms of concocted allegations against him. Mr. Ikyange disclosed that all the sponsors and executors behind the
planned hachet move have already been identified and are been monitored,
warning that machinery has already been set in motion to confront them
head long with adequate measure equal to their intended action. He called on the students to concentrate on their studies rather than
play into the hands of those whom he said will not use their children,
but rather those of others to cause confusion and disaffection among
their elected representatives, thereby jeopardising their future as
leaders of tomorrow. The Speaker said he will not fold his hands and watch any person or
group under whatever disguise tarnished his image through spononsored,
baseless and unsubstantiated allegations, assuring that all legal and
administrative means would be deployed to make the pepertrators of the
hate campaign and peddlers of falsehood against him to bear the full
consequences of their actions. While appealing to the people of Ushongo Local Government and beyond
to disregard the misinformation against him and the House, the Speaker
said he has not, and will not do anything that will bring shame and
disgrace to his people, both in his personal and official capacity as
Speaker of the State legislature.
A new vaccine-based treatment for HIV has succeeded in suppressing the virus in five patients, raising hopes further research could help prevent Aids without the need for daily drugs. Independent of the United Kingdom reported on Friday that researchers combined two innovative HIV vaccines with a drug usually used to treat cancer in the trial, conducted over three years at the IrsiCaixa Aids Research Institute in Barcelona. After receiving the treatment, the virus was undetectable in five out of 24 participants and its spread was stopped by their immune systems, reported the New Scientist. One of them has been drug-free for seven months. Around 18 million people – half of all those living with HIV around the world – take ART to slow the progression of the infection, according to the UN. But these drugs are expensive and can cause unpleasant side effects. Patients have to remember to take them every day, sometimes over their entire lives. Mitchell Warren, executive dire...
