Kano State House Of Assembly Begins Probe Of Emir, Muhammad Sanusi II
The Assembly on Wednesday mandated the committee to probe Sanusi’s conducts and alleged financial misappropriation currently rocking the Emirate Council.
The move to probe the Emir was at the instance of a motion of urgent public importance initiated by a member representing Nasarawa Local Government, Alhaji Ibrahim Gama.
Gama presented to the House a series of allegations against Sanusi II, including his statements condemning the proposed Kano light rail project of Kano State Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
Hon. Gama, who is the Chairman of the House Committee on Works, said that, “the statement from the Emir is capable of tarnishing his image, the government and that of the Assembly.
“The Emir during his recent speech in Kaduna, alleged that the Kano State Governor and his entourage, including myself as the Chairman of the House Committee on Works, wasted one month in China seeking for loan to construct rail.
“The Emir’s statement was not true, we spent only four days in China, and our visit was to find out the capability of the company to handle the rail project. His allegations have caused a lot of insult to me, the state government and also the House of Assembly by the general public in the state and outside the state.”
Gama also faulted Emir Sanusi for sending his daughter to represent him in one of the functions organised by the Bring Back Our Girls Group (BBOG) in Abuja, describing it as inimical to the tradition of the Emirate Council.
“There are many responsible Emirate Council members who could have represented him at the programme. This is the first time we are seeing such in the historical traditional home,” he added.
According to Gama, the mode of dressing by the Emir’s daughter during the Programme, was an embarrassment to the Emirate Council and the tradition of Kano people.
He also accused Sanusi of introducing religious issues that are contrary to the teachings of Islam, saying such things are capable of disgracing the religion.
Gama further accused Emir Sanusi of involvement in political issues, misappropriation of the Emirate Council’s fund, and making statements against President Muhammad Buhari.
Already, the state anti-graft commission is probing the Emirate Council over the N6 billion it allegedly spent since Sanusi ascended the throne.
The Emirate Council, which admitted that it received N4.3 billion under Sanusi, said that the money was spent on royal furniture, posh cars in the Emir’s convoy, reconstruction of the palace, chartered flights, and telephone bills,
Meanwhile, a prominent Islamic cleric, Sheikh Nasiru Bazallah, has been arraigned before a Kano Senior Magistrate Court for allegedly insulting Sanusi.
The prosecution alleged that Sheikh Bazallah insulted the Kano monarch with the intention to cause a breach of public peace.
The cleric was charged on Wednesday for inciting disturbance, defamation of the character of the monarch, contrary to Sections 114, 392 and 399 of the Penal Code Law.
According to the First Information Report, “on May 8, 2017, Emir Sanusi lodged a complaint to the Kano State Commissioner of Police alleging that the accused on March 20, 2017, acted in a manner that defamed his character.”
Sanusi also alleged that the Islamic scholar criminally gathered his followers at Goron Dutse Quarters where he made statements to incite disturbance, defame the character of the monarch with the intention to demean his integrity.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the allegations and applied to the court to admit him into bail.
Police prosecutor, Inspector Haziel Ledapwa, told the court that police investigation was still in progress.
The Presiding Magistrate, Hassan Ahmed Fagge admitted the accused on bail in the sum of N1 million with two reliable sureties, who must be directors in federal ministries.
