JUST IN: JAMB Extends Registration Deadline For 2018 UTME

In order to douse tension and pressure from the numerous candidates who are yet to complete their registration in the ongoing 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination registration exercise.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has extended the deadline till midnight of Sunday, February 11.

The registration which was to end midnight of Tuesday, February 6, has been extended.

This was as the examination body has arrested an owner of tutorial centre in Lagos, who allegedly charged each candidate N30,000 for registration, especially as the deadline was close.

In a statement issued on Tuesday night, the Head of the Information and Public Relations Unit of JAMB, Dr. Fabian Benjamin,  explains that the decision to extend the deadline was a difficult one for the board, noting that Nigerians were in the habit of waiting for the last minute before taking decision.
He, however, added that the registration for the direct entry candidates will continue even after the February 11 deadline.
The statement reads in part; “JAMB as a responsive organisation has taken the decision albeit with great hesitation to accommodate candidates who failed to register within the two months window period that ended at midnight of Tuesday, 6th February, 2018.
“The failure of these candidates to register is unfortunate and the Board hastens to add that this culture of impunity will not be tolerated henceforth. Indeed penalty will be imposed for late registration from next session. UTME candidates are, therefore, strongly advised to take advantage of the extension to register as request for further extension would not be entertained.”
Meanwhile, men of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps have arrested the operator of Sure Academy Tutorial Centre in Lagos who was alleged to be engaging in illegal registration exercise and charging each candidate the sum of N30,000 instead of the approved N6,500.
According to the Head of the Lagos Office of the examination body, Mr. Sunday Aladegbaye, the alleged culprit was caught in the act when the Board sent its men to go and register at the centre and were issued receipt for the money paid.
He explained; “Upon receiving information from members of the public, we detailed someone to follow the matter up by registering at the centre.
“And on Tuesday evening our agent successfully paid the N30,000 demanded at the Centre located on Havilla Plaza, 3, Aina Street, Ojodu, Berger, Lagos.”
He said the matter would be followed to a logical conclusion, adding that JAMB would continue to expose the bad eggs in the society.
