IGP Idris, Declared Unfit to hold any office in the country after he 'SHUNNED' senate invitation for the 3rd time..
This is the third time the IGP failed to appear before the Senate, after invitation was extended to him to brief the red chambers on the spate of killings across the states.
He was expected to explain to the lawmakers the alleged manhandling of senator Dino Melaye by operatives of the Special anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in whose custody Dino Melaye has been detained in the last two weeks.
Senate leader, Ahmed Lawan moved a motion ,stating that the IGP be allowed to face Committee of the whole. He said: “That the Senate do receive the Inspector General of Police to brief this distinguished Senate on the spate of killings across the country and inhuman treatment of Senator Dino.”
After 10 minutes of dead silence in wait for the IGP, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki announced that he was unavailable.
“Distinguished Colleagues, I have just been told that the IGP was neither available nor any of his representatives.”
Reacting to the development, Senators Ahmed Lawan (Yobe North), Emmanuel Bwacha, Isah Hamman Misau (Bauchi Central) described the development as a national embarrassment.
Misau recalled how he made about 13 allegations against the IGP which were true, noting that he has embarrassed President Buhari.
“Today, Mr. President, what the IG is doing is not against the parliament, but against President Buhari and there is nowhere in the world where an appointee cannot be summoned to face the parliament.”
“The law that backed the IGP to do what he is doing is the same law that backed the parliament to invite him, particularly section 80, 81 and 82.”
Reacting to the development, the Senate declared that the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris was not fit to hold any public office both within and outside the country.
The upper chamber also said that Idris is an enemy of democracy.
Senate President, Bukola Saraki, after a closed session declared the following resolutions of the red chamber.
“In a close session, we deliberated the non-appearance of the IGP to the Senate in plenary after series of invitations.
“The Senate believed it was a gross disrespect to this institution and constituted authority. It also noted that the IGP’s refusal to appear before an investigative committee was overruled by a court of competent jurisdiction in April this year.
“The Senate, therefore, view this persistent refusal as a great danger to democracy. And so resolved that the IGP as an enemy of democracy is not fit to hold any public office within and outside Nigeria.
“The leadership of the Senate was also mandated to look into the matter for further necessary action”.
